Painting Inspiration

As you will know if you follow my blog, or are one of Facebook or Instagram friends and followers, that I get my inspiration for my paintings from all sorts of places, mostly, My imagination, I see something and it gives me an idea, my husband Adrian, is also good at challenging me and over the years he has come up with great ideas. I also take on miniature commission Work, which again has lead me to paint usual subjects,  it that’s for another post

So to get to the point ……. last week on social media I put up a couple of posts opening up my Facebook and Instagram pages to suggestions for what I called “what to paint next?”

And several people posted ideas, Stephanie on Instagram suggested a Vintage Tea Cups and Saucers. Linda suggested owls and Kaz from Facebook palm tree beach. I have in fact painted all these subjects in the past, but great to be reminded and to think of a new twist for them, I do like to do things different. So I have painted all of these suggestions which can be seen in my timelines.

But for this  post here today, I am showing how I developed the idea of the vintage tea cup …….

“Afternoon Tea”

A cake stand with delicious cupcakes, china cup and saucer and a vase of Spring flowers …… How fun would a miniature painting of an afternoon tea be in a dolls house kitchen or dinning room, or miniature cafe perhaps?

This Kitchen Diner display shows the two new paintings, Adrian made me the table, from scratch using wood we had left from building The Gallery and some picture frames, I just love it, I love miniatures and especially unique things, also shown is a beautiful dresser, which was a gift from our Aunt, which is a 1:12th Jane Newman.

How to paint a dolls house street scene :: Posted by: Hazel on April 13th, 2020

Painting A Dollhouse Miniature Street Landscape Window shopping dolls house picture

Window Shopping

Today I thought I would paint a street scene, I have painted this type of pictures in the past and I do love the challeng.

As I was painting this piece seemed to evolve and I’m calling it “Window Shopping” the lady is out walking her dog and looking at the dresses in the boutique windows.

It’s set in Spring and the blossom is in the tree and the window boxes are trailing pretty flowers.

On Display in The Gallery

The finished piece is shown here on display in my miniature 1:12th Art Gallery. It is 1 5/8th by 2 3/4 inches in size, painted on semi sheen card in encaustic wax paint.

I took some photographs as I started and then got a little carried away so the progress jumps a bit, but I hope you can see how it was painted.

American Miniaturist Magazine Features Hazel Rayfield :: Posted by: Hazel on January 16th, 2020

The American Miniaturist

The American Miniaturist Magazine is a global magazine featuring miniaturists and Dollhouse collectors from all over the world.

In the February 2020 issue I am delighted to say my miniature art gets a three page feature.

I was contacted last year via instagram by a feature writer for the magazine and invited to be interviewed and have an article written. The editor Auralea also got in touch and the feature was planned.

It is lovely to see my art in print, this is the first feature in a US magazine, having been featured in UK publications in the past and I’m very honoured to have been included in the American Miniaturist.

The article touches on how I first started painting for dolls’ houses which is a nice story so I thought I’d expand on that a little …..

It all began in 2013, I had been painting in encaustic for about two years then and selling small and larger art, when my husband who is a decorator (a very practical and varied talented man ) was working for a client who asked him if he would be able to help her build the basement for her Georgian Dolls House.

He took on the challenge.

And whilst he was working on her dolls’ house she asked him if I would paint her some pictures for her house. She wanted her miniature house to have original art, she already owned a larger piece of my work. She bought some tiny frames and I painted varies subjects to fit them, she asked for the paintings to be colour co-ordinated to fit in with certain decor in the rooms but otherwise I was left to my own imagination.

Following her taking receipt of the paintings I blogged about it and more requests and commissions came for dollhouse paintings. I starting selling tiny miniatures in my shops and as they say the rest is history…….. As far as I am aware pieces of my Art In Wax are currently in 18 countries spanned over 4 continents.
