Painting onto a different type of Card

Recently I have been working painting with my encaustic wax on some patterned papers I bought from a local craft shop and they have a very different effect so I thought I would show some here today.

These design papers have an abstract print in what, I feel are rustic / distressed / shabby paper chic style. They are a 200gsm Matt paper support, unlike the encaustic card I mostly paint on which is a gloss. The gloss card allows the wax to move and flow, it allows for blending on the support. The Matt surface is porous so when the wax is on its on !! I blend colours before applying more and a little by reheating the wax once in place. It gives an interesting effect and the wax has a great contrast in texture to the paper background.

I have painted these three pictures : Red Poppies : Purple and red poppies : Flower pot in this style recently and as you can see the results are modern style pieces of wall art. Each of these paintings are 6 inches wide, and different heights I have cropped the photos for this blog post but they are for sale and I can send more information on sizes and if you would like them mounted or not. Please contact me for more details on how to buy Art in Wax.

I have also painted some miniatures in this way using tiny pieces of these patterned paper. And in the next blog post I will show photos of me painting in miniature in this way.

Zentangle Inspired Encaustic Art :: Posted by: Hazel on August 24th, 2015

Art In Wax Inspired by ZenTangle Style Art

Poppy Painting and Zentangle Sketch
For many many years, long before I painted in hot wax I have loved to doodle and draw, pictures and patterns. Recently I have seen some work in which patterns are the main focus of the art, and in particular an art form called Zentangle.

Tangles and Patterns

Having seen some wonderful pictures in this art form, I decided to try a few sketches of my own which was fun, I started by doing a sunflower, using an ink pen and my sketch pad, I often do sketches before I do my Art in Wax paintings but I hadn’t tried this form of tangles pattern drawing, which I find to be, not only fun but very relaxing and a bit addictive……

Hot Wax : Tangles and Patterns

After drawing with my pens and sketch book I got to wondering, could I do some of these patterns style pictures in my encaustic wax, if you have read my blog before you know how I like to experiment and see just what I can do in wax !!

Patchwork Sunflower was my first tangle inspired piece of Art In Wax, I am calling it patchwork as that is what it reminds me of, working in hot wax is very different to sitting and drawing with a pen, which I can do anywhere, whereas with my wax, I need to be in the studio, with my heat tools etc. I think the wax pictures are more of an “inspired by” rather than a Tangle, and I think the patchwork feel to the way, both patterns, texture and colour palette mix works is what I wanted to achieve rather than a copy of my drawings.

As you can see from the pictures below, over the past few weeks I have been having fun with this style of painting, the Kingfisher, The Poppies and the Silver flower are all shown with the original drawing. I have also added some pictures from my sketch pad not yet painted in wax, but soon maybe ……

What do you think ?

What you you think of my new tangle inspired pictures, they are fun aren’t they ? Please leave a comment if you would like too below

Poppies original art :: Posted by: Hazel on September 10th, 2012

Poppies Poppies Poppies

One of my favourite subjects to paint

Hazel Rayfield Encaustic PoppiesYou only have to look in my online art gallery or shop to see poppies are one of my favourite subjects to paint. As floral displays or in a landscape I have a real passion for painting these wispy flowers.

Poppies

The poppy family comes in many different shapes and colours, from purples to red and of course the wonderful yellows and oranges as seen the California poppies. Weather its a field of bright red poppies swaying in the breeze to the dried seed heads these are beautiful plants and make very popular painting art subjects.

Painting Poppies

As I have said many times on the art in wax website and here on my blog, I love to paint flowers and they feature in most of my paintings, I am naturally drawn to certain flowers, Daisies, Lavender and Roses often feature but poppies seem to just appear! they somehow naturally flow into my work and I love them …….
In the photograph shown here the painting on the wall of some large red poppies and seed heads is the newest painting I have created, the picture I am holding was done earlier this year and has just been re framed ready for display.
