Art In Wax Painting Highland Cows – First Commission of 2017 :: Posted by: Hazel on January 3rd, 2017
First Commission of 2017
Highland Cow – Modern Dolls House Art
Happy New Year to all my blog followers.
I was thinking of a subject for the first blog post of the new year when I received a commission to paint a miniature highland cow for a dolls house owner in Scotland, so I thought the first commission of the year would make a great first blog post of 2017.
Commissioned Art For Modern Dolls House
The miniature collector asked if I could paint a highland Cow picture for her dolls house, as this is a her favourite animal and she has several pictures in her home and it would be fun to have a miniature painting for her miniature property.
I painted two for choice and she has order both, the landscape has the cow in a heather filled grassland, this is an impressionist piece and has been supplied in a black wooden frame size 3 x 4 inches. The other piece of art is a on encaustic cream gloss card and is a modern, more of a portrait style just 2 1/2 inches high.
The photos shown here are on display in my own miniature property : The Gallery which is my 1:12 scale art gallery.
Commissioning a piece of miniature art
I love painting commissions, especially miniatures, these are only paint in my style, I do not paint reproductions. If you would like to commission a piece at a specific size and subject matter please contact me for more details.

Flower Cottage Landscapes : Online art exhibit by Hazel Rayfield
Miniature Art In Wax meets “Room” size Art In Wax
Today sees the launch of a brand new collection of my Encaustic Art : Flower Cottage Exhibition
The collection, which can ve viewed online on my exhibition page : http://www.artinwax.co.uk/exhibit-flower-cottage-landscapes.php, comprises of six paintings, each A6 in size (so approx. 6 x 4 inches) each, and features a miniature cottage painting with a foreground of vibrant flowers.
Inspiration : My Dolls House size Art
My miniature paintings especially my tiny “Dolls House Art” are very popular, I am proud that in the past few years several hundred of my small paintings have travelled to new dolls house homes and miniature collections across the world, I still paint larger pieces and these too continue to be as popular as ever.
I have, painted miniature versions of my larger pieces of art at different times, all my art is original, some inspired by nature and some just from my imagination. I don’t create prints or paint reproductions. Some of my art has a theme but no two paintings are them same even if in a similar theme.
I have sold larger pieces and miniature similar versions, which have been sold as sets, “one for you home and one for your dollhouse” !! I have also sold a few of these my “miniature meets wall art” paintings, in the same theme as this collection, so I thought it would be fun to work on a collection in this style for an exhibit feature, and as you can see below this is what I came up with ….
These paintings are for sale, this are painted on encaustic gloss card and backed with a coloured card, they are signed on the back and are £10 each plus postage and packaging.
Step by step – painting a miniature dolls house art in wax :: Posted by: Hazel on July 21st, 2016
Step by step – painting a miniature dolls house painting using encaustic wax and heat tools.
Miniature Art In Wax
I thought it might be interesting to show how I painted this miniature dolls house piece of art.
This painting is of a miniature flower pot and shows the stages of the painting.
I am painting using a specialist heat tool called an encaustic stylus. Which I use to melt the encaustic wax and paint and blend with. The papers I am using as a support for this and the other miniatures shown in this post have an abstract design with a distressed styles, it is a Matt paper / card stock from a local craft supplier, the encaustic card I normally paint on is a gloss surface which allows the wax to move more freely. This Matt surface is a porous surface and when the wax is painted on it stays on, it can tricky working so small on this type of support as there is little room for error !!
Miniature Art In Wax- Painting a flower pot
- Using one of my smaller nibs on the heated painting stylus, I start by cutting my card or paper support to size, in this case 2 x 1.5 inches
- I used a mixture of brown, bronze and gold to paint the flower pot.
- Adding some grass to the bottom of the pot.
- Next using a mixture of purple and silver wax I paint the tiny lavender.
- Red poppies are added and then a variety of colours used to create an abundance of tiny bedding plants which I like to think of as in the style of busy lizzy flowers
- Once finished the wax has a light polish with a soft cloth and I have backed this painting onto card stock to give a little more support to the painting.
More Miniature Art In Wax on patterned papers
The paintings have a great texture and the wax paint has a lovely sheen which off set with the patterned paper background has a very striking effect.
These miniatures would be great in a modern dolls house or contemporary miniature setting.
Some of these paints may still be available for sale please contact me for more information on buying Art in wax
Please note Art In Wax is for collectors and not a toy and not suitable for children.
