Painting in the Art In Wax Studio – Video Demonstration :: Posted by: Hazel on July 13th, 2014

Visit me in my Studio and watch me paint

Lavender on encausticbord

This new video just uploaded to the Art In Wax YouTube channel shows me painting in my little studio area here in Southend.

I introduce myself and then give a brief walk around my studio set up for the day and then paint a picture of some lavender flowers.

Encaustic Techniques

Encaustic art comes in a very wide and varied range of styles. It is a wonderful medium to work in and artists around the world use many different types of wax and with many different styles and techniques of working which all fall under the umbrella of “Encaustic”.

Different Styles

I myself work in different ways with wax. In fact I use two different types of wax and different supports and styles when working in each of these waxes.

When working on gloss card I use a wax paint that is suitable for this support and when working on, wood panels and absorbent supports, and the Ampersand Arts Encausticbord as in this video I use the wonderful handmade paints of R & F Paints.

I first started using the R & F paints last year when I reviewed their Encaustic starter kit and blogged about it : www.artinwax.co.uk/blog/encaustic-starter-kit-review/ and since then I have lots of their wax and love to work with it, when working onto these supports and with this formula of wax I layer the wax and fuse between layers, the effects are amazing from strong colours to misty effects when clear wax is layer over colour to give depth and softness.

I also love working in more of a free and abstract way with the deeper layers, using hot air to move and form the wax and layering to create pieces of art just a bit different from my other work !!!

Pieces of Art In Wax in both styles are available to buy online via my online store : Shop Art In Wax. If you don’t see a picture you are looking for in the shop please contact me.

Wax on Wood :: Posted by: Hazel on October 7th, 2013

Wax on Wood

More wax paintings on wood panels

I have been painting on wood again, with the R F Paints handmade paints, these are couple of the new pictures now uploaded to the Art In wax Online Gallery, please visit the gallery page to see larger views of these pictures.

The Lavender is on a 4 x 4 panel and the boat is 8 x 8 I sourced these panels at Jacksons art, they are plain wood, sanded plywood, with a 20mm depth, with reinforced bracing on the back. I applied a couple of coats of gesso (Encaustic Gesso) before painting onto them with the wax paints.

Flowers and Words :: Posted by: Hazel on July 28th, 2013

New paintings : Flowers, Words and Wax

The pictures below are all new, they are a bit different from anything I have done with wax before as they have words printed …….

Shabby Chic Inspired

I love some of the shabby chic style artwork and accessories that are around at the moment, and these paintings are inspired, albeit just slightly by some of the shabby chic things I like.

I think, to say something is shabby chic, covers many styles so I say these are inspired by rather than anything else.

I started by printing onto my encaustic gloss card, the words that you can see in black below, I then covered the ink from the words in clear wax. A technique used in encaustic art when using stamps, I haven’t used stamps in my artwork but I understand this to be the technique.

I then created the backgrounds of the paintings, using pearl cream wax and gold wax, adding a little coloured wax here and there, the backgrounds are therefore not a solid colours and the gold hints shine through giving a glint in the light. Some of the background wax covers the words in places giving a rustic look I feel.

I then painted the flowers in hot wax, using a combination of iron, stylus and hot air, to give the resulting paintings ……

Artwork

The artwork above shows four paintings, the blue flowers and the Love is an A4 piece, with the Calm lavender and the Love pink and blue flowers are A5 and the Pink Roses Love is smaller at A6.

They are hard backed, so can free stand, be displayed on a easel or be mounted and framed, they would look good in a rustic frame without glass in my opinion

For sale

These paintings are for sale ……. contact me if you would to find out how to purchase them.
