Art In Wax : Encaustic Art By Hazel Rayfield

Painting onto a different type of Card

Recently I have been working painting with my encaustic wax on some patterned papers I bought from a local craft shop and they have a very different effect so I thought I would show some here today.

These design papers have an abstract print in what, I feel are rustic / distressed / shabby paper chic style. They are a 200gsm Matt paper support, unlike the encaustic card I mostly paint on which is a gloss. The gloss card allows the wax to move and flow, it allows for blending on the support. The Matt surface is porous so when the wax is on its on !! I blend colours before applying more and a little by reheating the wax once in place. It gives an interesting effect and the wax has a great contrast in texture to the paper background.

I have painted these three pictures : Red Poppies : Purple and red poppies : Flower pot in this style recently and as you can see the results are modern style pieces of wall art. Each of these paintings are 6 inches wide, and different heights I have cropped the photos for this blog post but they are for sale and I can send more information on sizes and if you would like them mounted or not. Please contact me for more details on how to buy Art in Wax.

I have also painted some miniatures in this way using tiny pieces of these patterned paper. And in the next blog post I will show photos of me painting in miniature in this way.

Exhibition Fantasy Flowers :: Posted by: Hazel on January 8th, 2016

New for 2016 Art Exhibition on Art In Wax

Fantasy Flowers : New Online Exhibit

Art In Wax Exhibtion
View Exhibit here : Fantasy Flowers Art In Wax
Over the past few months I have been drawing and painting some new Zentangle inspired pieces, there is a blog post about these pattern style pictures, so I thought I would paint a small series of them as fantasy flowers to display on the Art In Wax Exhibit page, which I tend to change once or twice a year.

This new collection of 4 A3 size pictures painted in my Encaustic wax are very different to my normal style of flower paintings. They are inspired by a new type of art I discovered a few months ago and which I am enjoying as part of my creativity, it is a drawing art form known as Zentangle.

My own “doodle tangles” as I call them are based on this type of pattern drawing and the fantasy flowers have a patchwork style to them. A Zentangle originally was a drawing on a 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch piece of card, I like to doodle my pattern / tangles in different shapes, as many people do, my favourite being flowers, as you will know if you have read before I am passionate about painting flowers.

Inspiration : Tangle meets Wax

Inspired by my ink drawings I thought it would be fun to paint a collection of these fantasy flowers using my wax paints. It was a challenge and I hope you like the results : www.artinwax.co.uk/exhibit-zentangle-fantasy-flowers.php

Painting Dolls House Art By Miniature Artist Hazel Rayfield :: Posted by: Hazel on January 21st, 2015

Painting Dolls House Art

Painting Tiny in Encaustic Wax

I thought it might be fun to show some pictures of me painting my miniature Dolls House art pictures, this is blog post shows a little demonstration of me painting a landscape and a Lady in miniature.

Being a miniature artist is great fun, painting miniature Dolls House Art in hot wax can be a challenge.

Landscape Miniature Painting

This painting of a countryside view is a landscape picture measuring 24 x 38 mm so 1 1/2 inches by under an inch in size. After creating the sky and background landscape I added some darker wax in the foreground, melting the wax on an up turned Encaustic iron which I use as mini hotplate. I then use a variety of heated stylus tools to paint with, heating the wax and applying and painting as I go.

A Sassy Lady : Lady Juliette

Meet Lady Juliette in her pretty purple hat with flowers on and her long flowing auburn locks of hair ….

She could fit nicely into a period property (dollhouse) or a modern setting depending on the setting, the overall painting measures 1 1/2 x 2 inches approx so plenty of room to cut it down to fit a frame maybe.

The Gallery 1:12 Scale Miniature Scene Art Gallery :: Posted by: Hazel on January 21st, 2015

The Gallery 1:12 Scale Art Gallery

Painting Art In Wax In Miniature

As many of you who read my blog know I have a passion for painting in hot wax – using many techniques, different wax formula and on various supports.

I also paint in many styles and sizes, including miniature.

I really enjoy the challenge and the results when painting encaustic in miniature.

Again if you have read my blog in the past you will know that I also own a miniature property a 1:12 scale Art Gallery which my very clever and patient husband Adrian built for me.

The Gallery as it is called resides in our home and houses a collection of my tiny Art, it is a fun addition to our home.

The Gallery had its grand opening in 2013 and since then Adrian has also built some easels and an Art Browser for display and the paintings change from time to time too.

The Gallery : The Back Story

When we were planning and building The Gallery we chatted and a “back story” developed over time so just for fun I thought I might share our (frictional) story …….

The property at 27 Coast Road is a Victorian double fronted shop property which started life as a bakery called The Granary.

It has seen many changes over the years, starting as a bakery where the bakers worked long hours and mostly baked bread that they delivered, sold at market or was collected from the shop. Then moving into an era where cakes and sweet treats became popular and Ladies would browse and shop for delicious sweets and later having part of the shop became a small tea room, where tea in China cups graced the tables and cakes and pastries were enjoyed.

But in time with post war rationing and the rise of convenience foods and supermarkets the family business closed and the shop stood empty for some years, still owned by the family but no longer a going concern.

In the 1990’s a Mr Rayfield moved to this part of town, he was a builder by trade and as he past the shop in disrepair, each day on his way to work and thought what a shame it was that should a wonderful building was no longer being used.

Some years later, Mr R married and settled down, his wife was a very keen artist and with his encouragement starting showing her art in exhibitions and selling her paintings on the Internet.

So when an opportunity came to buy the Old Granary from a distance relative of the original baker the couple bought the property and set about restoring the building, keeping the exterior as it was with its Victorian panel features but inside it became a modern contemporary Art Gallery with a high gloss floor and spot lighting just right for displaying lots of Art ………

All in miniature of course 😉 wink !!!!!

And just for fun I have made a graphic interpretation of The Granary …… along side some pictures of The Gallery
