The Gallery 1:12 Scale Art Gallery

Painting Art In Wax In Miniature

As many of you who read my blog know I have a passion for painting in hot wax – using many techniques, different wax formula and on various supports.

I also paint in many styles and sizes, including miniature.

I really enjoy the challenge and the results when painting encaustic in miniature.

Again if you have read my blog in the past you will know that I also own a miniature property a 1:12 scale Art Gallery which my very clever and patient husband Adrian built for me.

The Gallery as it is called resides in our home and houses a collection of my tiny Art, it is a fun addition to our home.

The Gallery had its grand opening in 2013 and since then Adrian has also built some easels and an Art Browser for display and the paintings change from time to time too.

The Gallery : The Back Story

When we were planning and building The Gallery we chatted and a “back story” developed over time so just for fun I thought I might share our (frictional) story …….

The property at 27 Coast Road is a Victorian double fronted shop property which started life as a bakery called The Granary.

It has seen many changes over the years, starting as a bakery where the bakers worked long hours and mostly baked bread that they delivered, sold at market or was collected from the shop. Then moving into an era where cakes and sweet treats became popular and Ladies would browse and shop for delicious sweets and later having part of the shop became a small tea room, where tea in China cups graced the tables and cakes and pastries were enjoyed.

But in time with post war rationing and the rise of convenience foods and supermarkets the family business closed and the shop stood empty for some years, still owned by the family but no longer a going concern.

In the 1990’s a Mr Rayfield moved to this part of town, he was a builder by trade and as he past the shop in disrepair, each day on his way to work and thought what a shame it was that should a wonderful building was no longer being used.

Some years later, Mr R married and settled down, his wife was a very keen artist and with his encouragement starting showing her art in exhibitions and selling her paintings on the Internet.

So when an opportunity came to buy the Old Granary from a distance relative of the original baker the couple bought the property and set about restoring the building, keeping the exterior as it was with its Victorian panel features but inside it became a modern contemporary Art Gallery with a high gloss floor and spot lighting just right for displaying lots of Art ………

All in miniature of course ;-) wink !!!!!

And just for fun I have made a graphic interpretation of The Granary …… along side some pictures of The Gallery

Summer Holiday – painting challenge :: Posted by: Hazel on July 13th, 2014

Painting Challenge ; Summer Holiday Theme

In an online arts forum I am a member of one of the contributor suggested we had a little challenge and the topic of “Summer Holiday” was agreed upon. This was just a fun challenge between a few fellow artists but the only thing was that it was to be different from our normal style …… so no wax for me in the challenge!

Ice Cream

Nothing says summer holiday to me more than ice cream, it is my favorite summer treat.

My husband Adrian and I live on the South East Coast of England, in Southend on Sea. Which since the Georgian era has been a popular Seaside resort, and has the longest pleasure pier in the world.

So it seemed only fitting that as we live by the sea that I should choose an ice cream as my subject. I pondered what to paint it in, considered watercolors but I do love sketching with the elegant writer water soluble pen I bought recently so, that is what I did …… and the sketch below, on the right is the result, its is sketch and wash on a canvas board 7 x 5 inches.

And then for fun I painted a couple of ice cream cones in wax too ….. onto Gloss card one is A5 and the other a miniature ACEO.

What do you think ? Did it make you think of Summer ?

Art In Wax on Ampersand Art Supplies Encausticbord Video Demonstrations :: Posted by: Hazel on June 25th, 2014

Working with Ampersand Art Supply Encausticbord

Hazel Rayfield Artist

Video demonstrations Encausticbord

When I was approached by Karyn at Ampersand Art Supply earlier this year to create some demonstrations of me working with their wonderful products for their YouTube channel, I was really excited.

I love to paint in hot wax and have used the Encausticbord panels and cradle in the past when I reviewed the R&F Handmade Paints Starter kit on this blog last year and the kit included some of the panels and a cradle.

The Encausticbord has not been readily available in the UK other than in the kits as far as I am aware, but I am informed that Ampersand Art Supply who are based in Buda Texas, are looking to have UK supplier later this year.

Always up for a challenge

If you have read my blog before you know that I love to see what can be done in hot wax and I love to challenge myself and try new things, so when this opportunity came I was very excited to be working with Ampersand and with these wonderful encaustic supports.

Working with Ampersand Encausticbord

This is what Ampersand Arts Supply say about Encausticbord …….

A Creative Collaboration between Ampersand™ and R&F Handmade Paints
This creative collaboration began in 2008 when the two manufacturers, authorities in their respective fields of wood painting panels and encaustic paint colors, started working together to dream up the perfect surface for encaustic paints. This combination of Ampersand’s archival panel coating technology and R&F’s expertise in encaustics led to Encausticbord™, a unique wood panel that has the tooth to hold encaustic and mixed media unlike any other surface.

Making the videos

My husband Adrian, a great amateur photographer in his own right, filmed as I painted. We are not professional film makers, we got the giggles a few times and had a few out-takes too …… but I have a passion for painting Art In Wax and I hope this comes over in the videos.

The two videos created especially for Ampersand Art Supply are now live and can be seen online on the Ampersand Art Supply YouTube Channel. I have posted the direct links to my demonstrations below :

I am using the wonderful and amazing colour wax paints by R & F Paints in these films.

Two video demonstrations

Cradled Encausticbord :
This film shows me working on an Encausticbord cradle which is 6 x 6 inches and a prefect size for this subject, in this film I demonstrate the stages of how I painted a Sunflower head.

The video can be watched here : Ampersand Art Supply : Hazel Rayfield Cradled Encausticbord.

Artist Trading Cards in Encaustic :
In this film I demonstrate the techniques working in miniature, onto Encaustic ACEO / ATC 2.5 x 3.5 inch size Encausticbord panels which are great fun to work with. Here I create three pieces using different styles and technique, from painting directly onto the surface, to a mixed media piece and a colorful abstract.

The video can be watched here : Ampersand Art Supply : Hazel Rayfield Artist Trading Cards in Encaustic.

The finished pieces

These are the finished pictures, this is been a great challenge / project. Ampersand Art Supply and their products have made painting my Art In Wax a pleasure.

A New Collection : Feathered

The Birds : Art In Wax

Over the past week I have been painting a subject which I have done before on occasion but this week was inspired to paint some more …… birds.

The first was a Peacock, I mentioned on Facebook I was wondering what to paint in the studio that day and someone suggested a peacock …..

A Flock of Colour

So I have been having fun with wax ….. after the Peacock came the flamingo, then the Kingfisher.

I was then asked if I could do a Raven, so this as next, then thinking about colour, I thought maybe an exotic bird and a parrot …… and this is the colorful flock I came up with …..
