Miniature Art : Fun ways to display Art

I thought it might be fun to make a display of how Miniature Art can be displayed and enjoyed.

Micro Art Gallery : I have used a very affordable box frame, removed the mount and glass and arranged some of my art to give a miniature Gallery effect in a unique and fun way.

Miniature Easels and small frames also make a great way to display tiny art …….

Miniature Art In Wax

Painting in Miniature

As you know if you read my blog or have looked at my website I paint “Art In Wax” I work in specialist wax paint using heat tools to melt the wax and paint with it using brushes, stylus tools, much like a artist palette knife but hot, a hotplate to work on or melt wax and even hot air to move and merge the wax.

I paint in many sizes, large wall art and in miniature. I started painting small, mostly ACEO collectible size several years ago and for the past 18 months have painted even smaller which I sometimes refer to as Dolls House Art as many of my tiny pieces of Art In Wax are now in Dolls Houses across the world.

The Gallery 1:12 Miniature Art Gallery

I have my own miniature Art Gallery that my husband Adrian built for me last year, you can see pictures of it on the blog here at the Grand Opening . Since doing that post The Gallery has lots of new pictures and exhibits a lot of my new miniature Art.

Collecting Art

Miniature art is a great way to be an Art Collector.

Miniature Art is not just for Dolls Houses and Miniature Scenes

I know that some collectors of ACEO miniature artworks that have bought my Art In wax display them in collections, in albums or on mini easels, I myself have many small paintings displayed on easels of different sizes and styles.

From the feedback I have had, I have been told people have bought Art In Wax miniature art, as art for themselves, one lady has a piece on her desk at work and others have told me it is a great way to own original art when you don’t have a lot of wall space.

Do you own miniature Art ?

Art In Wax on Ampersand Art Supplies Encausticbord Video Demonstrations :: Posted by: Hazel on June 25th, 2014

Working with Ampersand Art Supply Encausticbord

Hazel Rayfield Artist

Video demonstrations Encausticbord

When I was approached by Karyn at Ampersand Art Supply earlier this year to create some demonstrations of me working with their wonderful products for their YouTube channel, I was really excited.

I love to paint in hot wax and have used the Encausticbord panels and cradle in the past when I reviewed the R&F Handmade Paints Starter kit on this blog last year and the kit included some of the panels and a cradle.

The Encausticbord has not been readily available in the UK other than in the kits as far as I am aware, but I am informed that Ampersand Art Supply who are based in Buda Texas, are looking to have UK supplier later this year.

Always up for a challenge

If you have read my blog before you know that I love to see what can be done in hot wax and I love to challenge myself and try new things, so when this opportunity came I was very excited to be working with Ampersand and with these wonderful encaustic supports.

Working with Ampersand Encausticbord

This is what Ampersand Arts Supply say about Encausticbord …….

A Creative Collaboration between Ampersand™ and R&F Handmade Paints
This creative collaboration began in 2008 when the two manufacturers, authorities in their respective fields of wood painting panels and encaustic paint colors, started working together to dream up the perfect surface for encaustic paints. This combination of Ampersand’s archival panel coating technology and R&F’s expertise in encaustics led to Encausticbord™, a unique wood panel that has the tooth to hold encaustic and mixed media unlike any other surface.

Making the videos

My husband Adrian, a great amateur photographer in his own right, filmed as I painted. We are not professional film makers, we got the giggles a few times and had a few out-takes too …… but I have a passion for painting Art In Wax and I hope this comes over in the videos.

The two videos created especially for Ampersand Art Supply are now live and can be seen online on the Ampersand Art Supply YouTube Channel. I have posted the direct links to my demonstrations below :

I am using the wonderful and amazing colour wax paints by R & F Paints in these films.

Two video demonstrations

Cradled Encausticbord :
This film shows me working on an Encausticbord cradle which is 6 x 6 inches and a prefect size for this subject, in this film I demonstrate the stages of how I painted a Sunflower head.

The video can be watched here : Ampersand Art Supply : Hazel Rayfield Cradled Encausticbord.

Artist Trading Cards in Encaustic :
In this film I demonstrate the techniques working in miniature, onto Encaustic ACEO / ATC 2.5 x 3.5 inch size Encausticbord panels which are great fun to work with. Here I create three pieces using different styles and technique, from painting directly onto the surface, to a mixed media piece and a colorful abstract.

The video can be watched here : Ampersand Art Supply : Hazel Rayfield Artist Trading Cards in Encaustic.

The finished pieces

These are the finished pictures, this is been a great challenge / project. Ampersand Art Supply and their products have made painting my Art In Wax a pleasure.

Painting Art in Wax In Miniature

Art In Wax miniature paintings come in many forms as I do love to paint small works of art.

Dolls House Miniatures

Wax on Wood small paintings

ACEO / ATC Artist Trading card Collectibles

Painting small is a challenge

It can be a challenge to paint small using hot wax, but since I started to paint small, I still paint large pieces too, I have found that working on a small scale is both challenging and very rewarding.

I use very fine nibs on my heated stylus when adding the details to my tiny paintings and they take as long as some other paintings as they require a good deal of concentration and of course a steady hand !!!!

Wax on wood

The daisy painting shown at the top of this post is just 4 x 4 inches in size and is painted onto a wood panel using R&F Handmade paints wax medium, this is a new painting and will take a few weeks to harden fully and cure.

Dolls House Miniature Art

The small pieces art shown below are new arrivals in The Gallery ….. my “folly”, a 1:12 scale miniature scene Art Gallery my husband Adrian built for me to house just some of my collection of miniatures.

They are painted using hot wax medium, Encaustic wax paint by Arts Encaustic onto card which I have then backed onto 2mm mount board, thus giving the paintings a strong support and a canvas style effect, ready to hany on a dolls house wall or displayed on a miniature easel.

The new tiny paintings are displayed below on a new easel, courtesy of “Country Crafts” handmade miniature furniture. The three landscapes are 3 x 2 inches and the Poppies are just 2 x 2.5 inches in size.

These paintings are now in my Art In Wax Miniatures store.

ACEO / ATC Collectibles

Painting ACEO and ATC – Artist Trading Card size is great fun, each piece is 3.5 x 2.5 inches in size.

The Art in wax art cards I paint vary enormously, from these fun limited colour palette style vases, to elegant colourful flowers and pretty seascapes and landscapes, a small selection of new paintings are shown below, they have a great vibrancy of colour and the wax has a lovely sheen.

Hot Wax Mixed Media :: Posted by: Hazel on January 23rd, 2014

Encaustic Mixed Media – Digital Art and Wax

Experimenting with wax

I have been experimenting again with wax! This time with printed digital media and wax.

I am showing the results below as I think it is good to try new things, but before you read on, I want to say that this was a fun project and one that I have had buzzing around in my head for a long time, but I have concluded that this is not a route I want to take Art In Wax – not at this time anyway.

Creating digital graphic mixed media pictures

Having been a web developer and designer for many years and make digital graphics for websites and other online media, facebook banners, online shop fronts etc etc I thought it might be fun to try and join my encaustic art work with some digital graphics I created to make a mixed media style painting.

Steam Punk Inspired

I have a fondness for some of the steam punk styling that is very popular at the moment, I myself am drawn to elements of this style and have a couple of pieces of modest jewelry that reflects this trend.

I especially like the clocks and cogs elements and it is from this angle I decided to experiment with.

The paintings below are ACEO (3.5 x 2.5 inch small pieces of Art) and have elements created on my computer, I have put together some cogs and spokes together with some flowers and a watch and chain I drew some time ago which form the printed part of the picture, then using hot wax painted some roses and flower vines.

My encaustic gloss card wouldn’t print well on my printer so I have use photo paper, which is thinner than my regular painting surface, I layered clear wax over the printed parts first then added layers of wax including some gold wax then painted on the flowers and leaves in wax using my stylus ….. I have hard backed these as the paper was so thin …..

A Bit different from the normal Art In Wax

This was a bit of challenge I set myself, painting onto the thin card wasn’t easy but I am glad I tried this mixed media style of artwork ……. they are fun and a bit different from the normal Art In Wax………
